Our Process

Chelsea Recruits works a little different than most recruitment agencies. You don't start by paying a fee and then we throw unsuitable teaching opportunities or teaching candidates at you.

We begin with an initial analysis and consultation to determine where you are today and what you are aiming to achieve in the future. From there, we'll brainstorm 3-5 potential teacher employment strategies, customized to you and your needs. These plans include both digital recruitment applications and human services, as well as projected KPIs and real results.

We'll then work with you to select which recruitment plan will be the most beneficial for your budget, timeline, and goals. Then, we assemble your team and start implementing- while you sit back and relax.

Long story short...

Our job isn't done until you're seeing the promised results. We believe so deeply in the amazing abilities of our Chelsea Recruits experts that our services are 100% free for teachers. And employers only pay a one-time placement fee on selection of a teaching candidate. So what's the harm in trying our international teacher recruitment services?

Let's work together

Our recruitment team is excited to start seeking out teaching opportunities for teaching candidates, and to discuss a teacher talent acquistion plan with employers.

Schedule an initial consultation to chat with a Chelsea Recruits expert and learn how our process works.

Teaching English As A Foreign Language: A Life-Altering Challenge

Getting Started

Need Some Help Getting Your TEFL Career Started?

Get the Chelsea Recruits: Teaching English As A Foreign Language - Basic Travel Guide.

Our guide will help shorten your learning curve, make the most of your resources, and maximize your TEFL teacher employment opportunities both online and offline.

1 – Start with understanding your options

There are two basic ways to teach English as a foreign language. One way is to do so in your home country. All over America and other English-speaking countries, there are English classes offered by the government and by various learning institutions. These classes are designed to help non-native English speakers learn English in a fast-paced, student-centered environment. Programs like these are great for EFL teachers who can’t make the commitment to travel abroad.

The other option is to teach English as a foreign language in another country. This is where the majority of teachers end up, since there is a much greater demand for teachers in the students’ native country. Teaching abroad is also considered more of a challenge because of the travel required- most teachers are expected to spend at least a year at a time in the country where they are employed.

With the spread of English worldwide as an essential tool in business communication, many foreign students are ready to learn- and they’re not always children. Corporations and businesses also hold English classes for their employees who must communicate overseas. If you’re not afraid of travel, the field of job possibilities is both exciting and nearly endless.

2 – TEFL (or TESOL or CELTA) certification

If you are NOT a fully qualified teacher (that is, hold a BEd, MEd, PGCE, etc), then the first thing you’ll need to obtain to teach English as a foreign language is a TEFL (TESOL or CELTA) certification. This will give you the qualification to teach EFL in a classroom and covers the basic structure of English grammar. There are several ways to become TEFL (TESOL, CELTA)-certified. Many language schools offer one-month certification courses. Colleges and universities can also provide TEFL certification.

The best certification to get is one that provides a MINIMUM of 120-hours of course material PLUS 10-20 hours of practicum. The practicum element has become increasingly important for potential employers especially when considering new graduates or those who have had no prior teaching experience.

Although it is possible to get a job teaching English as a foreign language without certification, your chances of employment are not nearly as good. As more and more people become certified, competition for the good positions is increasing. We recommend TEFL certification for anyone who is seriously interested in this career.

3 – Finding a teaching job

Even if your eventual goal is to teach English in your home country, you may want to seriously consider teaching abroad at first. Most teachers start out with at least a year in a foreign country, and the experience gained in doing so is really invaluable.

While we don’t necessarily recommend heading to a foreign country to find a job, you can certainly do so if you’re feeling adventurous. However, there are plenty of resources online that can help you line up a position before you go.

The finale: last tidbits on teaching English as a foreign language

Whether you’re in a foreign country or on home soil, teaching English as a foreign language can be a challenging, yet highly rewarding teaching field. Be prepared to work hard and to devote a lot of time to your career, especially at first. In exchange for your efforts, you’ll be experiencing firsthand one of the most rewarding and interesting jobs there is. You'll get the chance to impact the lives of future generations, and travel the world, all while experiencing amazing cultures and learning new languages.

So there you have it… we hope these 3 tips for starting and building a career as an international TEFL teacher were consumable. We hope our tips will inspire and prompt you into embarking on the journey to creating your international teaching career and the lifestyle of your dreams.

Do Something Exotic With Your Degree: Teach English In China

Introduction - Why teach English in China?

The demand for English teachers all over the world is growing quickly. As more countries interact with each other through business and other types of communication, the need for English speakers in foreign lands is growing. And nowhere is this need greater, than in China.

If you’re considering teaching English in China, you’ve chosen a challenging and competitive field. Every day international teachers choose China as their career field; nevertheless, teacher demand still far outweighs teacher supply.

For those who plan to teach English in China, there are a few basics you should know before beginning a job search.

1 – Qualifications

All you really need to teach English in China is a college degree and fluency in English. Many countries require language teachers to have TEFL (TESOL or CELTA) certification; however, China is not as stringent about this requirement. Nonetheless, it’s wise to get certified before you begin your job search. It’ll put you far ahead of the pack.

Getting certified in ESL is an easy process. Many colleges and community schools offer month-long certification programs. It is also possible to do an online TEFL certificate course with practicum hours (see our recommended course below). If you’re planning on teaching overseas, it’s best to arm yourself with a certificate just in case the job hunt is a little more cutthroat than you had expected.

2 – Study the Chinese culture

Keep in mind that when you teach English in China, you’ll be living there for at least the length of a school term, so you’ll want to know as much as possible about your future home.

Try to learn a bit about the Chinese culture and a few basic words of the language.

3 – Do your research

Research the Chinese school system and decide at which level you’d like to teach. English is taught from kindergarten school all the way through to the university level. Some businesses will also hire you to teach their employees English skills, or you may be interested in teaching conversational skills to adults in general.

Be realistic about your own English teaching skills and experience. The last thing you want, is to be way over your head and unable to meet both student and employer teaching expectations. When in doubt, it is advisable to start teaching the younger children first, and to work your way up from there as you gain more confidence and teaching experience.

4 – Know what to expect

Keep in mind that if you choose to teach English in China, it won’t necessarily be the most financially rewarding career available - at least, not at first. Many Chinese schools and universities will only require you to teach 14-15 classroom hours per week; however, you may be expected to be available for office hours and other types of responsibilities.

If you have a master’s degree or a doctorate, you may qualify to work as a Foreign Expert in a Chinese university. Foreign Experts teach higher level classes and generally get a higher pay rate than Foreign Teachers.

Don’t be afraid to negotiate terms. Although your paycheck may not be very impressive, most schools and universities will provide you with airfare to and from China. In addition, the majority of schools and universities will offer a free fully furnished apartment for foreign teachers, which eliminates the out-of-pocket expenses of an apartment or house. Medical insurances and Mandarin language classes are normally given too.

So, overall, your entire salary package could add up to be a very attractive offer!

5 – In China, relationships - Guānxì - are everything!

Make the necessary contacts. This may require some international phone calls. The Internet will be an invaluable tool at this point.

Contact schools, universities, businesses and job boards to determine which jobs are right for you.

Once you've selected some companies that you want to apply to, follow their guidelines for the application process.

6 – Talk to the experts

Talk to your college. Many universities will have arrangements with Chinese schools; these “sister school” programs allow you to teach English in China while a Chinese teacher visits your school.

The organization where you get your ESL certification will also most likely have a job placement assistance program.

And, of course...of course, if you are reading this blog then you know that Chelsea Recruits' international recruitment experts are only a phone call away!

Choosing to teach English in China is not just a career- it’s a major commitment, so its important to think carefully before making your final decision! If you love the Chinese culture; if teaching English is your passion; if you’re unafraid of new and challenging situations - then you’ve quite possibly found the right career field.
